WASHINGTON – President Donald Trump, who is well known as a teetotaler, proclaimed Monday that he has "never had a beer in my life" and joked that "it is one of my only good traits."
Trump's comments, which drew laughter from the audience as he delivered remarks touting a new trade deal, came as his Supreme Court nominee, Brett Kavanaugh, is being investigated by the FBI for sexual misconduct allegations that took place while he was reportedly drunk in high school and college.
"I'm not a drinker, I can honestly say I've never had a beer in my life," Trump said in the Rose Garden press briefing. "It’s one of my only good traits."
Trump joked that if he had been a drinker: "Can you imagine if I had, what a mess I’d be? I'd be the world's worst."
The president was responding to questions about Kavanaugh's drinking and whether he thinks his nominee lied about how much he drank in school. Trump said he doesn't think Kavanaugh lied.
"I watched him," Trump said. "I was surprised at how vocal he was about the fact that he likes beer...This is not a man that said that he was perfect with respect to alcohol."
He continued: "I think the judge has been pretty amazing about describing his situation with alcohol and with beer."
