MOBILE, Ala (WKRG)
After the City of Mobile this summer declined to financially support an on-campus stadium at the University of South Alabama, Mobile County has decided to spend $2.5 million on the project.
Monday, the Mobile County Commission approved the expenditure by a 2-0 vote. Commissioner Jerry Carl was absent but has in the past has expressed his support for the USA stadium project.
The money will technically go to sponsor an academic support center for student athletes. The three story building will be located behind one of the end zones. The facility will be used by all 400-plus USA athletes, not just football players. The building will also house athletic department offices. County Commissioner Connie Hudson said the building will be called the Mobile County Center for Academic Success.
The new USA stadium is expected to cost $72 million. Jaguar athletics officials hope it will open for the 2020 football season.
